Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) – On Sunday 8 December, Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, Pope Francis appointed Cardinal Luis Antonio G. Tagle, Archbishop of Manila, Philippines, to lead the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. Current Prefect Filoni was named Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem.
Cardinal Luis Antonio Gokim Tagle, was born on June 21, 1957, in Manila. He attended primary and secondary schools in Parañaque, at Saint Andrew's School, at the time administered by the Scheut missionaries. After graduating, he entered the capital's Saint Jose Seminary, headed by the Society of Jesus. He then studied philosophy at Manila University and theology at the Loyola School of Theology. He was ordained a priest on February 27, 1982 by the Bishop of Imus, Felix Pérez Paz. In the first years of his ministry he was parish vicar, spiritual director of the theological seminary of the diocese of Imus of which he then became rector, professor of philosophy and theology in various seminars. In 1985 he was sent to the Catholic University of America in Washington, where he obtained a doctorate in theology and a doctorate summa cum laude.
Once he returned to Imus in 1992, he again assumed the role of rector of the seminary as well as several diocesan offices. He has held conferences, retreats and seminars for the updating of priests, religious and laity in the Philippines and abroad. From 1997 to 2003 he was a member of the International Theological Commission, within the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. In 1998 he participated as an expert in the Special Assembly for Asia of the Synod of Bishops.
Appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Imus on October 22, 2001 by John Paul II, he gave impetus to the implementation of the directives arising from the diocesan pastoral assembly held in 1999, focusing especially on young people. In the meantime he has held important positions within the Bishops' Conference of the Philippines and the FABC. On 13 October 2011, Benedict XVI appointed him Archbishop of Manila. He continued his activity also within the National Bishops' Conference and the FABC. He has always been attentive to the media world. Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Cardinal in the Consistory of 24 November 2012. In September 2013 Pope Francis had appointed him a member of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples.
