Rome (Agenzia Fides) - "At the end of the liturgical celebration presided over by Pope Francis, on the occasion of World Mission Sunday, October 20, the Holy Father, referring to the Extraordinary Missionary Month that was in progress, told me: 'Thank you for all the work you have done'. And it was a thank you obviously addressed to all, which embraces all the national directions of the Pontifical Mission Societies". This is what Cardinal Fernando Filoni, Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, said in his opening address to the restricted Assembly of the Pontifical Mission Societies, currently underway at the International Center for Missionary Animation (CIAM).
The Extraordinary Missionary Month, announced by Pope Francis for October 2019, was celebrated worldwide in Catholic communities, dioceses, parishes, associations, ecclesial groups. The central theme was "Baptized and sent: the Church of Christ on mission in the world". The objective of the Extraordinary Missionary Month was to celebrate the hundredth anniversary of Pope Benedict XV’s Apostolic Letter "Maximum Illud", but also - remarked Cardinal Filoni - "to rekindle the ardor for mission".
The celebration of the Extraordinary Missionary Month was deliberately entrusted to the local Churches, in the five continents, that promoted prayers, liturgies, testimonies, in a widespread manner. To give an account of the missionary ferment throughout the world, Fides published a Dossier (see Fides, 4/11/2019) which contains the most significant news on the celebration of the Extraordinary Missionary Month.
