Kuching (Agenzia Fides) - The priests of the archdiocese of Kuching, in Malaysia and of the Apostolic Vicariate of Brunei have renewed their commitment to the mission ad gentes. In living the extraordinary missionary Month, announced by Pope Francis for October 2019, 84 priests from all over the Malaysian region of Sarawak and Brunei participated in a five-day spiritual retreat held in past days at St. Peter Seminary, in Kuching.
Father Antonio Pernia, former Superior General of the Society of the Divine Word (SVD), a Catholic congregation with the specific charism of missionary work, animated the retreat, urging priests present to "always be ready to leave their comfort zones and welcome in particular foreigners and the poor in parishes and communities, in the light of the teachings of the Church, the Bible and Pope Francis".
The reflection focused on the "mission ad gentes" and allowed priests to reflect "on the idea and meaning of 'mission', on its challenges and on new approaches in spreading the Good News in Malaysia and Asia", said to Fides Father David Au, one of the participants.
Moreover, in a multicultural society like the Malaysian one, "there is always the need to be more inclusive and to appreciate the diversity of cultures within the Church", said the priest. Both Malaysia and Brunei are Muslim-majority countries and multicultural societies, where Christians are a minority. (SD) (Agenzia Fides, 18/10/2019)
