AFRICA/BURKINA FASO - Appeal by the Head of State: "Let us not fall into the trap of sectarian war"

Ouagadougou (Agenzia Fides) - "These attacks aim to weaken the way we live together, passed down through our ancestors, and that we must safeguard at all costs", said the President of Burkina Faso, Roch Kaboré, in his message to the population alarmed by the attack on the mosque of Salmossi, which took place on Friday 11 October, in which 16 people lost their lives.
After the Christian communities, armed groups seeking to destabilize the Country have targeted the Muslim community, in an obvious attempt to trigger a sectarian conflict. A danger clearly highlighted by the Head of State in his speech to the nation. "Religions are vectors of tolerance and these barbaric and evil attacks show us the nature of the enemy we have to fight, in an individual and collective commitment of every moment", he said.
Among the most serious attacks suffered by the Catholic Church we remember that of Sunday 12 May against the church of Dablo, in which Fr. Siméon Yampa and five faithful were killed (see Fides, 13/5/2019).
Since 2015, at least 610 people have lost their lives in Burkina Faso in attacks attributed to jihadist groups. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides, 15/10/2019)
