Karthoum (Agenzia Fides) - Women in Darfur continue to be abused, sexually harassed and killed. As Fides learns, social researcher Ibtihal Ishag denounced the condition of women in Darfur, during a conference on violence against women in Darfur, organized by the Sudanese Women's Union in Khartoum.
As those present at the conference noted, President Omar Al Bashir's regime is accused of "destroying the social fabric just to strengthen its position and presence". The sociologist's appeal today calls for "concerted efforts to achieve just and global peace in Darfur and throughout Sudan". During the meeting, Ishag called for individual compensation for the victims, the removal of the causes of displacement and the inclusion of the Addis Ababa Agreement in the constitutional document.
The "Darfur Women Group", recently established and which has members in all five states, aims at peace and security in all war zones in Sudan, as well as promoting the political participation of women at all levels, stressed the researcher. The group has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Darfur Bar Association, an association of lawyers. Together they will organize a forum with the leaders of the armed movements in order to contribute to achieving peace. Ishag explained that the Group seeks to support the rights of women living in camps for displaced people, stressing the need to address the issues of women in Darfur within the framework of general issues throughout Sudan.
The sociologist also appealed for a greater commitment to women's political involvement at all levels, in accordance with the Constitutional Document, and criticized the low participation of women in the negotiations between the junta and the Freedom and Change Forces.
