Beirut (Agenzia Fides) - The Maronite Bishops have expressed their full support for the denunciation of Israeli drone incursions in Lebanese territory presented to the UN Security Council by Lebanese political authorities. The stance was expressed on the occasion of the monthly meeting of the Lebanese Bishops, held on Wednesday 4 September in Dimane, at the summer residence of Maronite Patriarch Bechara Boutros Rai. On that occasion, the Maronite Bishops expressed their appreciation for the choice of Lebanese President Michel Aoun to declare a state of economic emergency in Lebanon, inviting institutions and political forces not to impose new taxes on people with a low-income.
Patriarch Bechara Rai, as reported by Agenzia Fides (see Fides, 28/8/2019), deplored the Israeli drone attacks that fell on the night between Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 August in the southern suburbs of Beirut, which are mainly home to the Shiite population and where important presidents of the Hezbollah Shiite Party are located. In a statement released on Tuesday, August 27, the Lebanese Cardinal stigmatized the repeated Israeli violations of resolution 1701 unanimously approved by the UN Security Council in August 2006, which called for the withdrawal of the Israeli armed forces from southern Lebanon, to stop attacks by Hezbollah militias against the Israeli army and the end of any military operation on the border areas.
