San Juan (Agenzia Fides) – Today, from 5pm (local time), July 26, to the same time tomorrow, the Bishops of Puerto Rico have called a day of prayer called "24 hours with Jesus for peace in Puerto Rico". The National Shrine dedicated to Our Lady, Mother of Divine Providence, of Cupey, in Río Piedras, has been indicated as the place where all believers who wish to live this day of prayer will gather for the crucial moment the nation is experiencing. Most of the 24 hours will be dedicated to Eucharistic Adoration, according to the note sent to Fides. The Bishops intend to invite Puerto Ricans to present their leaders and the Puerto Rican people to the God of life, who peacefully demonstrated by calling for the resignation of Governor Ricardo Roselló.
After 12 days of popular demonstrations due to the publication of chat conversations where Rosselló and some of his advisers derided and insulted artists, journalists, the LGBT and politicians, the governor was forced to resign. At the news of the resignation, the Bishops invited all Puerto Ricans "to maintain the serenity and democratic balance that this period of government transition deserves. It is time to move forward in this crucial moment in history, which calls us to a profound reflection as a Puerto Rican society. Let us make this a great opportunity to unite as a people and work together, without flags and parties, in the search for the common good to overcome the fiscal crisis, corruption, violence and other evils" (see Fides 19/7/2019; 25/7/2019).
