Almaty (Agenzia Fides) - "We thank the Caritas of Shymkent for offering help to the citizens of Arys. In June, an explosion occurred in the military warehouse of the city: following the event, residents were urgently asked to evacuate the area to go to the nearby town of Shymkent. There, Caritas volunteers gave clothes and first basic aid to the displaced. We hope this will be a little help to resume normal life after what happened". This is what Caritas in Almaty, Kazakhstan said in a note sent to Agenzia Fides, reporting on the consequences of the explosion at the military base in Arys, a city of 44,000 inhabitants in the south of the country. After the explosion, the population of the entire town was invited to leave the area and move temporarily to the surrounding area.
According to the official spokesman of the Interior Ministry's Emergency Committee, Nursultan Nurakhmetov, following the accident, "70 people requested medical assistance, 45 of them were hospitalized, while 3 died".
The dramatic event saw the nation unite around the town of Arys: 145 experts and bomb technicians were sent to the area to secure the area and extinguish over 50 fires that also damaged private homes. In the Turkestan region a special fund was created to help the victims, while 10 tons of humanitarian aid were sent by air from Karaganda. Furthermore, the Aqmola region has made available the five largest health centers in the area and a tourist center to accommodate the children of Arys.
About a month after the disaster, the return of the displaced persons continues in recent days thanks to the help of 640 volunteers in charge of assisting the residents. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Kassym Jomart Tokayev's staff has announced that the Attorney General of the Republic, Gizat Nurdauletov, is taking an interest in indicting those responsible for the explosion.
