Caracas (Agenzia Fides) - The Archbishop of Maracaibo and President of the Venezuelan Bishops' Conference (CEV), Mgr. José Luis Azuaje, assured that the Church will remain with the people, especially with those who suffer most in the severe crisis generated by the regime of Nicolás Maduro.
In his words at the opening of the 102nd Plenary Assembly of the Bishops of Venezuela, on 7 July, the Archbishop denounced that the lack of public services, violence and the rise of the diaspora, among other factors, have considerably worsened the living conditions of the Venezuelans.
According to the note sent to Fides by CEV, Mgr. Azuaje also encouraged to keep hope alive in the face of difficulties, that is why "the Church will continue to remain on the side of the people, mainly next to those who suffer the most, the most vulnerable".
The Assembly of Bishops, underway this week, also has a special instrument to analyze the situation in the country, namely the complete report on Venezuela of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, published on 4 July and presented to the international press by the same High Commissioner, Michelle Bachelet. Torture, tightening on the means of communication and social control: the UN agency reports in detail the documented abuses in Venezuela.
The document records the crisis in the health sector in the country: hospitals lack personnel, supplies, medicines and electricity to keep the equipment running. The report cites the 2019 national hospital survey according to which from November 2018 to February 2019, there were 1,557 deaths in hospitals due to lack of supplies. The violation of indigenous rights is not secondary: they suffer the presence of criminals and armed groups that do not respect their customs and traditions.
The Bishops are in the assembly from 7 to 12 July. Today, Thursday 11 July, CEV will present the People of God the exhortation of the CXII Plenary Assembly of the Venezuelan Episcopate. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 11/07/2019)
