Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - The Holy Father has appointed Fr. Sylvester David, O.M.I., currently Vicar General of the archdiocese of Durban, as Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Cape Town (South Africa), 1
Fr. Sylvester David, O.M.I., was born on 15 August 1953 in Durban. After obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Durban-Westville (South Africa) and then a Bachelor of Arts in Counseling Psychology at the University of South Africa, on 4 January 1984 he entered the Congregation of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate. He completed his philosophical and theological formation at the St. Joseph's Theological Institute in Cedara (1984-1990). He was ordained a priest on 8 February 1991. Since his ordination he has held the following positions and completed further studies: 1991-1994: Parish Vicar and then Parish Priest of St. Francis of Assisi in Eastwood (Durban) and at the same time formator at the Cleland Pre- Novitiate; 1994-1996: parish priest of St. John's in Estcourt (Durban); 1996-1999: parish priest of St. Joseph's in Cedara (Durban) and at the same time formator at St. Joseph's Scholasticate; 1999-2002: Studies in Rome for a Licentiate in Biblical Theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University; 2002-2004: Parish priest of St. Louis' in Clairwood and St. Mary's in Merebank (Durban); 2005-2007: Formator at the Cebula House of Formation (Prenovitiate) and professor at the St. Joseph’s Theological Institute; 2007-2015: President of St. Joseph's Theological Institute; 2015-2016: Sabbatical year; 2016: Parish priest of the Blessed Sacrament Parish and professor at St. Joseph's Theological Institute; since 2017: Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Durban.
