Kinshasa (Agenzia Fides) - Christian unity is necessary and precious in order to overcome the climate of sociopolitical tensions in the country and to contribute to the unity and the good of the whole nation: with this spirit Christians in the Democratic Republic of Congo lived the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, which ended on January 25th, which had a great resonance also in Kinshasa. As Fides learns, the Salvation Army, the Catholic Church and Protestant Church communities, gathered in the Church of Christ, prayed for unity. As Fr. Mbumba Prosper, of the Scheut Missionaries (CICM) reports to Fides: "The annual event took place in a not very peaceful political climate in the Democratic Republic of Congo". Among the participants, the Catholic Richard Demandona, President of the Ecumenical Provincial Committee in Kinshasa, said: "I encourage all Christians in Kinshasa to seek true justice".
"In order for justice to be effective, it is also necessary that there is unity. We can go forward only if we are united", said Msgr. Sadath Mossi, vice-president of the Synod of the Church of Christ.
In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Christians are the majority (over 50% of the population) and "ecumenism is a reality", as highlighted by Professor Roger Bimwala, rector of William Booth University in Kinshasa, official university of the Salvation Army, who added: "I will work to strengthen ecumenism".
