AFRICA/TOGO - Peaceful elections but there is no opposition in Parliament

Lomé (Agenzia Fides) - "The day of the elections was peaceful, there was no violence, even though many people did not go to vote", writes to Fides Fr. Donald Zagore, of the Society for African Missions (SMA) referring to the legislative elections held yesterday, December 20, in Togo (see Fides 20/12/208).
"The main challenge will start for the whole nation, however, after the elections", he adds. "The sad reality is that in the Togolese Parliament only the majority linked to the president will take decisions, since the opposition, commonly called C14, is no longer represented. Therefore it will no longer be able to participate actively in the various debates on the contents of the legislative provisions and on the constitutional reforms that will take place in Parliament. This will certainly not help a climate of peace and stability and may be the cause of further violent clashes in the future". (DZ/AP) (Agenzia Fides, 21/12/2018)
