AFRICA/NIGER - Caritas Niger busy elaborating strategic plan to assist drought stricken people

Friday, 13 January 2006

Niamey (Fides Service)- Now organised at the national, diocesan and parish level, Caritas Niger (Caritas Dévelopement Niger, CADEV-Niger) has decided to give itself a new strategic planning structure. CADEV-Niger, at present involved in assisting drought stricken people (see Fides 3 October 2005), felt the need to define its field of intervention in matters of charity work and development. In the past months Caritas representatives made a profound analysis of the situation in Niger. Comparison between the objective reality and the basic inspiration of the organisation for Catholic charity work gave rise to a programme of action and intervention.
The definition of priority themes of intervention the formulation of an authentic all encompassing policy for the development of Niger, produced by its cadres and volunteers will allow CADEV-Niger to reinforce the consistency of its action to assist less fortunate citizens.
In view of the elaboration of a strategic action-plan Caritas Niger organised two meetings in January 2006 to identify priorities. During the first meeting in the capital on 4 January leading members of Niamey CADEV-Niger and principal church authorities in Niger outlined principal lines of action for Caritas. The purpose of the second 3 day meeting starting today in Maradi 13 January between some participants at the first meeting and base representatives is to verify and confirm the findings of the 4 January meeting. After these work-meetings Caritas Niger will issue a list of priorities to be discussed and approved by all concerned parties. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 13/1/2006 righe 30 parole 330)
