Tangier (Agenzia Fides) - "We denounce the trampling of the fundamental rights of migrants", say the Bishops of North Africa in the statement published at the end of the Assembly of CERNA (Bishops' Conference of the North African Region) which was held in Tangier (Morocco) from 23 to 26 September.
"The phenomenon of migration, which is increasing all over the world, remains one of the main causes of the suffering we share in our Countries", underlined the statement sent to Agenzia Fides. "Migration calls into question our solidarity with those who suffer and in a broader sense the respect due to every human being, whatever his situation".
As a sign of closeness and sharing on the theme that brings the southern shore closer to the north of the Mediterranean, a delegation of the Episcopal Commission for Migration (CEMI) of the Italian Episcopal Conference participated, led by His Exc. Mgr. Guerino Di Tora, Auxiliary Bishop of Rome, President of CEMI and the Migrantes Foundation, as well as His Eminence Cardinal Francesco Montenegro, Archbishop of Agrigento and President of the Italian Caritas.
Another point addressed by the Bishops is the evolution of societies in North Africa that "are increasingly debated on the recognition of religious pluralism and freedom of conscience". CERNA invites its communities "to take up the spiritual challenge of inter-religious encounter, in all its dimensions, and in particular in its encounter with God".
The Bishops conclude by stating "that it is a great joy for all our Churches to celebrate the beatification of Mgr. Pierre Claverie and his 18 fellow martyrs in Algeria, which will be held on December 8th in Oran". (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides, 28/9/2018)
