AMERICA/CHILE - “Here I am Lord for a holy Chile”: over two thousand students bear witness to the faith all over the country

Tuesday, 10 January 2006

Santiago (Fides Service) - Some 2,084 students are taking part in a month long annual National Mission initiative, the third in the series. The mission lasts the whole month of January and is more intense from 2 to 12. The students will be on mission in 50 different zones all over the country to bear witness to the faith. The slogan for this National Mission 2006 is “Here I am Lord for a holy Chile”. The 2,084 participants are mainly Chilean students from universities all over the country. However there are also about 120 students from Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador, Cuba, Peru and Uruguay and the initiative is beginning to spread because after taking part in the National Mission in Chile many of these foreign students promote similar initiatives in their own countries.
The 'National Mission' reaches all 13 regions of Chile. The regions have been divided into zones, between 45-50 each region having between 1 and 4 zones. Each zone is visited by about 40 missionaries. The missionary student participants gathered on Monday 2 January at the national Marian Shrine of Maipú to receive last minute instructions and start the mission. After the presentation of the national and zone leaders there was a Mass of Sending presided by the Papal Nuncio in Chile Archbishop Aldo Cavalli.
“National Mission” affects the entire country. In groups of two or three the missionaries visit homes door to door, to talk with people and share their concerns and hopes...besides homes visits the missionary university students meet to discuss the progress of the mission and visit hospitals, prisons, homes for the elderly and for orphans in the respective area...putting at the service of all the professional formation and individual capacities.
