ASIA/KOREA - New Auxiliary Bishop of Seoul appointed

Vatican City (Fides Service) - The Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI on 3 January 2006 appointed auxiliary Bishop of the archdiocese of 2006 of Seoul (Korea) Rev. Basilio Cho Kyu-man, Professor at the Major Seminary of Seoul and executive secretary of the Korean Bishops’ Conference, assigning to him the titular see of Elefantaria di Proconsolare.
The new Bishop was born on 8 June 1955 a Pochon, in the diocese of Pusan. He attended Sonshin high school (Minor Seminary). He served compulsory military service from to 1978-1980 He studied Theology at Seoul Major Seminary (Catholic University of Seoul), for a licentiate in systematic theology. He obtained a doctorate in dogmatic theology and Ecclesiology at Urban University in Rome (1986-1990). He was ordained a priest on 26 August 1982, for the Archdiocese of Seoul.
He has since been 1982-1984: assistant priest at Yeonhidong parish; 1991-2004: Professor Seoul major seminary (Catholic University of Seoul); 1992-1994: director of the major seminary bookshop; 1993-1996: responsible for Daegon dormitory; 1995-1997: delegate for students; 1998-2001: Vice Dean of Grad. School; 1999-2004: member of publishing commission; 2003-2004: delegate for academic affairs. Since 2004 executive secretary of the Korean Bishops’ Conference. (S.L.)
