ASIA/SYRIA - Appointment of the National Director of the PMS, Mgr. Mounir Saccal

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - On 19 April 2018 Cardinal Fernando Filoni, Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, appointed Mgr. Mounir Saccal, of the Syro-Catholic eparchy of Aleppo as National Director of the Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS) in Syria for five years (2018-2023).
The new National Director was born in Aleppo on 25 February 1957 and was ordained a priest in 1984. He received his Masters in Philosophy in 1980 and a Licentiate in Theology in 1984. In 1982 he founded a scout movement and was chaplain of various ecclesial movements. In 1990 he founded the Brotherhood of Our Lady of the Assumption (CNDA). He was Secretary of the Catholic Episcopal Conference in Aleppo for 12 years; Secretary of the Assembly of the Catholic hierarchy in Syria for 8 years; chaplain of the Equipe Notre Dame for 18 years; lawyer for the legal Court of second instance for 25 years. He founded and directed the Center for in-depth Theological Studies (CETHA) for 10 years. Since 2015 he has been President of the inter-ritual Catholic Court of first instance and Vicar General since 2016. (SL) (Agenzia Fides, 15/5/2018)
