ASIA/LEBANON - Maronite Church: the use of parish premises as polling stations may only be authorised by the local Bishop

Beirut (Agenzia Fides) – The decision whether or not to allow parish rooms to be used for Lebanon’s legislative elections scheduled for 6 May, falls only to the local Bishop, and it may not be imposed by any other political or religious authority. This was established by the Maronite bishops during their recent monthly meeting, held at the Patriarchal See of Bkerké Wednesday 4 April. The discussion regarding a possible use of church buildings to host polling stations in certain Christian majority areas was immediately taken up by the local media. The Maronite Bishops, in a statement issued at the end of their meeting, reiterated that the decision to use premises belonging to the local church for activities not connected with pastoral activity, falls solely to the local Bishop or to the Synod of the local Church.
