Karachi (Agenzia Fides) - The edition of the "New Short History of the Catholic Church, 2011", written by English Jesuit, Fr. Norman Tanner SJ, has been completed and published in Urdu.
The text, already translated into five languages, is now also available to the Pakistani faithful thanks to the precious work of translation in Urdu carried out by Pakistani priest Fr. Gulshan Barkat OMI, assisted by the Australian missionary Fr. Robert McCulloch, of the Missionary Society of San Colombano.
As reported to Fides by Fr. Mc Culloch, it took four years to complete the work of the new book, just presented in Karachi, at the National Catholic Institute of Theology, and in Rawalpindi at the Christian Study Center, an institute that carries out research and ecumenical activity.
"There is still a strong demand for Catholic publications, history and theology in Urdu language: the translation responds to the urgent need in Pakistan and in the Gulf States where many Urdu-speaking people live and wish to consult high-level works on the Catholic Church and its teaching and on Christianity", says Fr. Mc Culloch.
Bishop Benny Travas of Multan, Ms. Jennifer Jag Jivan, director of the Christian Study Center, prof. Charles Amjad-Ali of Chicago and Mr. Indrias Rehmat, dean of the National Catholic Institute of theology, helped to present the text, praising its scientific character but, at the same time, the popular style, which can reach a public made not only of specialists. The text will be used in seminaries and theological institutes but also during the ordinary catechesis of parish schools. The printing and publication of the Urdu translation was financed by the English Jesuit Province, to which Father Tanner belongs. (PA) (Agenzia Fides, 5/3/2018)
