VATICAN - Appointment of the Secretary and Adjunct Secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) – The Holy Father has appointed His Exc. Mgr. Protase Rugambwa, Archbishop-Bishop Emeritus of Kigoma, until now Secretary of the same Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and President of the Pontifical Mission Societies, as Secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. In addition His Holiness appointed Mgr. Giovanni Pietro Dal Toso, former Secretary of the Pontifical Council "Cor Unum", as Adjunct Secretary of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and President of the Pontifical Mission Societies, elevating him to the dignity of Archbishop.
The news was announced at noon by the Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, Cardinal Fernando Filoni, to the staff of the Congregation and the Pontifical Mission Societies, gathered for the occasion, as well as to the Rector of the Pontifical Urbaniana University, the Rectors of the Colleges dependent on Propaganda Fide and the General Secretaries of the Pontifical Mission Societies. Expressing his happiness and greetings, Cardinal Filoni underlined Archbishop Rugambwa’s and Mgr. Dal Toso’s long experience, which will continue to be made available to the missionary world.
Mgr. Giovanni Pietro Dal Toso was born in Vicenza on October 6, 1964 and grew up in Laives, in the province of Bolzano. He was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Bolzano-Brixen on June 24, 1989. He obtained his doctorate in philosophy at the Pontifical Gregorian University and a degree in canon law at the Pontifical Lateran University. In 1996 he was appointed as an Official at the Pontifical Council "Cor Unum". In 2004 he was appointed Under-Secretary of the same dicastery and Secretary on June 22, 2010.
