AFRICA/SENEGAL - Migrants, young people and women at the heart of Caritas' action in Africa

Dakar (Agenzia Fides) - Migrants, young people and women. These are the central points of the Caritas' action in Africa in the next few years according to what was established by the Second African Bishops' Meeting on Caritas, which took place in Dakar, Senegal, from 18 to 20 September (see Fides 29/8/2017).
Among the commitments made, says the final statement sent to Agenzia Fides, there are: "more attention to the problems of migrants and refugees, the consequences of political crisis and natural disasters, in order to contribute to the eradication of the causes of poverty in a continent rich in populations, especially of its young people, its cultures and its natural resources".
As for young people, the Bishops responsible for African Caritas state that they intend to "engage in the preparation and participation in the forthcoming Synod on Youth, because they are the wealth of the Church and the nation, and do everything possible to make them feel at home in Church. We will engage with our partners to create opportunities in their favor and to contribute to their integral formation and their Christian and civil growth".
We are also committed to "strengthening women's participation and making their contribution to the development of our families and communities visible".
Africa, a continent rich in natural resources, with a young and growing population, would have all the potential to improve the living conditions of its inhabitants. One of the powerful brakes to the harmonious development of the continent is the corruption of the elite. For this reason, the Bishops say that they intend to "encourage those who are responsible and elites who are at the service of the common good and to constantly denounce those who are corrupt and who see in maintaining the people in poor conditions, a strategy for the maintenance or the conquest of power".
