Beirut (Agenzia Fides) – So far public requests by Maronite Archbishop Boulos Matar of Beirut addressed to the highest institutional charges in Lebanon to reconsider a project for the installation of high tension cables in Mansouriyé, in Lebanon, have been ignored. In the evening of Monday 11 September Archbishop Matar, together with a group of priests whose parishes risk being affected by the project as well as political representatives, had openly expressed his concern regarding the decision taken by the energy ministry to allow the installation of high tension cables in a densely populated area despite protests staged by the local people against the project . "It is unacceptable” the Maronite archbishop told the media “that officials should allow this project so dangerous for the people in an almost clandestine manner". Archbishop Matar made a direct request to Lebanese President Michel Aoun to convince those responsible to take into consideration the protests of the people suggesting that at least an attempt should be made to lay high tension cables underground.
Despite the archbishop’s appeal – according to the Lebanese media – the work of installation continues as planned with no consideration for possible alternatives suggested by authoratative experts on matters connected with electromagnetic pollution . (GV) (Agenzia Fides 15/9/2017) .
