Guatemala City (Agenzia Fides) - The Bishops of Guatemala, in a statement sent to Fides, deplore the current situation of the country and express "their concern for the political and ideological confrontation around the events involving the Presidency of the Republic, the International Commission against Impunity, as well as the Constitutional Court and many other State and society institutions. " "We all ask for an attitude of dialogue and not defamation of the other" says the document.
"Our deep indignation for the unfounded accusations spread by a daily newspaper against the person of Mgr. Nicolas Thevenin, apostolic Nuncio in Guatemala and Decan of the Diplomatic Corps ... these statements, besides being unjust and dangerous, threaten peace and the international image of Guatemala".
The statement is inspired by the political crisis created after the expulsion of a UN High Commissioner from Guatemala by the President of Guatemala, a measure which was not implemented because it was blocked by the Constitutional Court. Before the measure, according to the Constitution, the President of Guatemala, Jimmy Morales, held consultations with various groups and institutions, including the Catholic and Evangelical Church, but not with everyone, as he should have done, without the presence of the press and in part, at the seat of the Nunciature.
