Nairobi (Agenzia Fides) - Nine pupils at Moi girls' boarding school in Kibera, Nairobi were killed in a fire during the night of September 2 (see Fides 2/9/2017).
Today Education Minister Fred Matiang'i updated the toll of the victims: from seven to nine. Among them is the daughter of the former commander of SPLA (Sudan's People Liberation Army), Paul Malong Awan.
The Minister underlined that many schools around the country have been set on fire across the Country, without however reporting the total number of attacks.
With reference to schools around the country which were set on fire last year (see Fides 1/8/2016), Matiang'i said: "Some of the fires we have faced before in the sector are related to that kind of thing, politicization of school headship, politicization of responsibility in the education sector. It is not right. We cannot resolve a conflict on the headship of the school by burning a school". (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides, 4/9/2017)
