AMERICA/PUERTO RICO -“We are grateful to Congress for approving funds for the poorest of the poor”

San Juan (Agenzia Fides) – We are grateful that Congress has approved a law which foresees a process to restructure the Island’s debt” say Archbishop Roberto O. González Nieves of San Juan de Puerto Rico and Reverend Heriberto Martínez-Rivera, Secretary General of the Puerto Rico Bible Society and Coordinator of the Ecumenical and Interreligious Coalition of Puerto Rico, in a letter addressed to the US Congress praising the approval of a law to restructure the Island’s debt.
“Since 2015 we have sought solutions to resolve the financial crisis in Puerto Rico which continues to affect its people, especially the poorest people and children” the letter reads. “working with the Jubilee USA network, the US Catholic Bishops’ Conference, the United Churches of Christ, the National Latin Evangelical Coalition, with the United States’ Presbyterian Church and Catholic Charities, we urged the Congress of the United States to take positive action" says the statement, sent also to Fides.
“Recently we rejoiced for the inclusion of funds for the Medicaid Programme 2017 for Puerto Rico, so avoiding a lack of funds which threatened to deny healthcare to more than 900,000 citizens of Puerto Rico”.
The Letter calls for a definitive solution for healthcare Puerto Rico and the extension of the Child Tax Credit (CTC) to include families with one or two children. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 04/08/2017)
