Caracas (Agenzia Fides) - "Useless, unnecessary and damaging to the Venezuelan people", this statement was repeated many times yesterday in the many demonstrations that took place on the election day to elect the members of the Constituent National Assembly. The day was marked, according to agency data, by violent demonstrations across the country.
The sentence is that of the message of the Bishops' Conference of Venezuela published on July 28, together with the call for non-violence (see Fides 28/07/2017). Unfortunately 10 people died yesterday, according to the prosecutor, and 15 according to the opposition. More than one hundred dead must be added to the demonstrations against President Maduro, which have been held in Venezuela for four months.
According to the latest news, only 9% went to vote (19 million).
The Venezuelan Catholic Church, employers, some trade unions, several university Dean, and leaders from countries such as Argentina, Peru, Panama, Mexico and Colombia, reject the Constituent process and have announced they will not recognize the Assembly that will be established after yesterday's elections.
