Mayo (Agenzia Fides) - The refugee camp in Mayo is a huge expanse of dust, mud and huts at the doors of Khartoum, capital of Sudan. Its population ranges between 300,000 and 700,000 people who arrived in the early 2000s, fleeing the conflict in Darfur. Many others escaped the war in South Sudan or the violence and poverty of the many outbreaks of crises in Sub-Saharan Africa. Since 2005 the NGO Emergency has activated a pediatric center in the neighborhood of Angola, Mayo.
The NGO's reports that for five days a week, a staff of pediatric doctors, nurses and health promoters offer free first aid and basic health services, a day care facility and an ambulance for the transfer of urgent cases to nearby hospitals. There are 50 babies who are cared for every day. Parallel to the clinic, family activities, antenatal care and postnatal care have also increased. In 2016, two new containers were set up, including a gynecologist, an international midwife and two Sudanese midwives. (AP) (Agenzia Fides, 7/7/2017)
