AMERICA/BRAZIL - Cardinal Da Rocha: "Corruption kills! Market interests are not a reason to sacrifice the people!"

Tuesday, 4 July 2017

Brazil (Agenzia Fides) - It is not the first time that the Bishops of Brazil warn about the economic reforms of the government, but the President of the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB), Cardinal Sergio Da Rocha, was particularly direct : "Market interests are no reason to sacrifice the people!", he said.
In a brief interview with the local press released on July 2, President of the CNBB, Cardinal Archbishop of Brasilia, explained that the CNBB is discussing the Brazilian crisis: "The political crisis must not continue! CNBB does not comment on President Michel Temer's situation, following the tradition of not commenting on governments and parties in a direct manner, but we are closely following developments of the crisis and the alternatives".
"The political crisis has aggravated due to the complaints against the president", the Cardinal said, "and we cannot accept that the government continues to ignore everything, to justify voting for projects or to give as a pretext that the country has to move forward. We must remember that corruption kills, because lack of resources denies the population health, education, nutrition and work".
Cardinal da Rocha's statements are expressed just when the Senate has to discuss and vote on the Labor Reform Act this week, and public opinion continues to put pressure on the corruption case involving former President Michel Temer. Brazil's current president pushed for impeachment against Dilma Rousseff, but now he might be hit. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 04/07/2017)
