Caracas (Agenzia Fides) - "One could speak of a government war against the people", says Cardinal Urosa who condemned the violent repression by both state security forces and paramilitary groups against the demonstrators, who in three months killed more than 90 people in Venezuela.
"We (the Bishops) ask the national government to reconsider, stop that attitude of wanting to establish a totalitarian Marxist militaristic system in Venezuela, and, of course, to refrain from using legal resources to dismantle the state. All this is reprehensible and intolerable and it is not what most Venezuelan people want", said Cardinal Urosa Savino on June 29 at the Nuestra Señora della Candelaria church in Caracas, after the celebration of St. Peter and St. Paul.
The Cardinal stressed that this is not only his opinion, but also that of the Episcopal Conference.
President Nicolás Maduro has convened a National Constituent Assembly whose elections are scheduled for July 30, but the Venezuelan Church disapproves (See Fides 19/05/2017) because it considers that the population does not want to change the Constitution but what is needed is food, public security, free and democratic elections, and respect for the law, among other priorities.
The note sent to Fides was published by the Archdiocese of Caracas on 30 June. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 01/07/2017)
