Johannesburg (Agenzia Fides) - "It is true that corruption in South Africa was a problem before Mr. Zuma came into office. It has however worsened during Mr. Zuma’s watch", says a statement by the Justice and Peace Commission of the Southern Africa Catholic Bishops' Conference (SACBC) sent to Agenzia Fides after the South African press published about 100,000 emails regarding the Gupta family with a business network linked to the Head of State.
"The leaked emails, if they are authentic, show that the president’s patronage network, as well as its plans to plunder state resources, is more complex and expansive than we thought", says "Justice and Peace", which denounces the expansion of the "cancer of corruption" to the point that this "has become the normal way of organizing our social, political and economic relationships in South Africa". Most of the delivery points for public services, have now become collection points for bribes. "We urge those implicated in the emails to do the right thing and consider resigning from their respective public offices if they know the revelations in the emails to be true", says Justice and Peace.
The Catholic Bishops' body calls on Zuma’s party, the African National Congress (ANC) to elect a candidate for the 2019 presidential election, a candidate able to investigate the activities of the current President and that "ethical credibility required to lead from the front in the fight against corruption in our country ".
