VATICAN - "Laity and Mission": a theological reflection on a growing phenomenon

Vatican City (Agenzia Fides) - From 13 to 18 February 2017, a seminar on the relationship between Laity and Mission was held at the International Center for Missionary Animation (CIAM) in Rome. The initiative was born in response to the growing concern of missionary animation in Christian communities and the positive integration of lay people in missionary cooperation among Churches. This issue is the subject of frequent debates and insights between the National Directors of the Pontifical Mission Societies, seeking answers to this enriching ecclesial phenomenon.
The presence of lay people baptized in the missionary activity of the Church is increasingly important, regardless of the social, ecclesial or cultural context in which it is promoted. In the last few decades, God is generating lay vocations for the mission, sent by local Churches and welcomed by other local Churches in their missionary commitment. It is a beautiful reality, a new Pentecost! Its charm, however, does not hide problems that pose serious challenges to the lay missionary vocation. The testimony of life, theological reflection and the exchange of experiences in the faith give this new publication on laity an original opening on the horizon of the mission of the Church. The volume "Laicado y Misiόn" was published in Spanish by the PPC publishing house (Madrid, Spain) as second opera of theological reflection on the mission of the OMNIS TERRA series of the International Pontifical Mission Union (PUM) Secretariat and CIAM in collaboration with The national direction of Obras Missionales Pontificias of Spain (OMP).
