Huaraz (Agenzia Fides) – In the Peruvian region of Ancash an estimated 332.050 minors are employed in different jobs, in many cases underpaid . The news comes from the Áncash Regional Labour Office Diretra, which reports that according to statistics the minors are aged 5 to 17 years and 41.9% are boys.
The children work in the fields, on the streets and in certain illegal activities. More precisely: 58.8% of these minors are involved in farm work; 12,5 % in activities of commerce, 8.8% are ambulant sellers and 8.2% are cleaners. Of these youngsters 2.2% work on building sites and 1.8% in other activities. To tackle the phenomenon Diretra is launching awareness projects in various sectors to diminish the high numbers of child workers, particularly in the most remote areas of the country, the project will consist in debates and formation courses for parents and children.
