Chiulo (Agenzia Fides) – On 13 June 1997 the first doctor of Medici con l’Africa CUAMM - the first healthcare NGO to be acknowledged in Italy and the largest Italian organization for safeguarding the health of African peoples - arrived in Angola to launch the first CUAMM mission in that country. In Uige, in northern Angola emergency interventions included assisting people displaced by civil war and giving new vigor to the activity of the local hospital. Many things have changed in twenty years but Medici con l’Africa CUAMM still stands side by side with the Angolan people.
“When we arrived in Angola – says Rev Dante Carraro, Medici con l’Africa CUAMM director, in a report to Fides – the country was still in a situation of civil war which had lasted for more than 20 years, bringing the healthcare system to a halt, putting people to flight and destroying social relations. In 2002 peace was made and we members of CUAMM were able to start the long term projects of cooperation, for which we have become known. In these years we have launched projects in various parts of Angola, with successes but also with difficulties. For example in 2004, we lost our nurse Marisa Ferrari in a car accident in Chiulo, and in 2005, an epidemic of Marburg robbed us of our pediatrician Maria Bonino who continued to care for the children in Uige to the very end”.
Today Africa CUAMM doctors in Angola are working together with the Angolan health ministry on a new project for Africa involving diagnosis and treatment of diabetes in patients already suffering from Tuberculosis. Meanwhile CUAMM continues to provide assistance for medical staff in the hospital in Chiulo, in southern Angola, and programmes for guaranteeing assisted delivery and nutritional aid for mother and child during pregnancy and the first two years of the infant’s life.
