Mocoa (Agenzia Fides) - SOS Children's Villages International is at the forefront of the populations affected by the mud avalanche that hit the Colombian town of Mocoa on April 1st and caused the death of over 350 people (See Fides 3/4/2017). The Organization, in particular, provides support and shelter to children who have lost their loved ones and to all families who have lost their homes. Among the initiatives it provides recreational and educational activities to children as well as psychological support to families to help them overcome the trauma due to natural disasters and promotes training courses to improve sanitation. "We are particularly worried about the physical and emotional health of children whose daily life has been interrupted", says the note of the Director of SOS Children's Villages Colombia sent to Fides. "Many children have been separated from their families or have lost them. Their education has also been interrupted. We are active in welcoming children and families in difficulty and helping them overcome this crisis".
The Organization has opened a Social Development Center in the neighborhood of El Progreso, where it provides care and shelter for children and families who have lost their homes and deals with the procedures for reuniting children with their families. (AP) (Agenzia Fides, 16/5/2017)
