El Seibo (Agenzia Fides) - "If the 'Central Romana' (agro-industrial company) dared to destroy the homes of 80 families in January 2016 at 3 o'clock in the night, without an order from the State Attorney, then stole their land and left them without work in Villa Guerrero de Santa Cruz, El Seibo ... If a Cuban entrepreneur dared to devastate the cultivations of 600 small farmers in Culebra Vicentillo, but the peasants managed to react, then it is true what Dangelyn said, an 11-year-old girl in the province of El Seibo speaking to farmers: 'We will not allow you to defeat us'."
This is what Father Miguel Ángel Gullón OP, a Dominican missionary denounces who, through a long reflection, recounts the terrible injustices and abuses that rural communities are experiencing in the province of El Seibo (Dominican Republic), where he has been carrying out his pastoral work for 18 years.
"We can console ourselves or justify everything by saying that there is nothing to do. History repeats itself, which is always the same, but nothing is further from reality. Dangelyn's words scare the heart of our province impoverished by the ruthless enrichment of foreign multinationals that make profit from land stolen from peasants. Then they leave us this contaminated land for many years due to herbicides and insecticides used and which are also carcinogenic according to the World Health Organization", wrote Father Gullón in his reflection.
