Beirut (Agenzia Fides) - The national emergencies that all Lebanon's political forces must urgently face are the fight against the "cancer" of corruption and the search for a widest possible consensus around a new electoral law that will allow the Country to renew Parliament and safeguard it from the risk of falling into a new institutional paralysis. These are the suggestions addressed to Lebanese political forces by the Maronite Bishop's Assembly which gathered on Wednesday, May 10th at the patriarchal seat of Bkerkè, under the presidency of Patriarch Bechara Boutros Rai. "The Lebanese", wrote the Bishops, "are tired of seeing their rights being usurped, and they refuse to become hostages of political interests. They do not want democracy to become a launch pad for those who want to abuse power. "In particular, the Maronite Bishops have launched an alarm regarding "the cancer of corruption" which seems to pervade and undermine the whole system from within: "We hope" says the final statement of the Assembly, sent to Agenzia Fides "that the establishment of a ministry for the fight against corruption becomes a good starting point for reforming the administration, freeing it from political interference that derives its origin from clientelism and nepotism".
