Caracas (Agenzia Fides) - "At present people need food, medicine, freedom and security, but the government does not solve these serious problems", denounces the Bishops' Conference of Venezuela (CEV) in a statement released yesterday, titled "Do not reform the Constitution but implement it". The document considers the proposal to convene a Constituent Assembly presented by the Head of State as unnecessary and dangerous for the Country's democracy.
"The proposal for a constituent Assembly seems to re-present the 2007 reform that was rejected by the people in a consultative referendum that same year", the Bishops say.
The Bishops' Conference of Venezuela also denounces "the repression against the legitimate protest with violence carried out by State security bodies: enough repression!".
The document concludes with an appeal: "We urge the population not to resign themselves to raising their voice in a sign of protest, but without falling into the game of those who, by causing violence, want to lead the Country towards scenarios of conflict in order to aggravate the situation and stay in power".
To this end, they invite all Catholic communities to convene a day of prayer for Peace on Sunday May 21. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 06/05/2017)
