San Pedro (Agenzia Fides) – “Inopportune and a threat to peace”. This is how the Bishop of San Pedro, Pierre Laurent Jubinville, C.S.Sp., regards a proposed bill to change Paraguay’s Constitution, in order to allow outgoing President Horacio Cartes to stand for re-election.

"We ask the authors and promoters of the bill to have the wisdom to read the signs of the times and the nobleness of soul to put their own interests at the service of the nation ", reads the letter signed by Bishop Jubinville, addressed to pastoral workers, religious and lay faithful who attended the Chrism Mass on Monday 10 April in Tacuatí.

"Another important value is respect for the law and Constitution, expressions of our social contract. This contract is applied in order to live in harmony with justice and democracy ", conclude la letter.

The situation continues to be tense, neither side shows any willingness to change position, while the local Catholic Church maintains its own stance: refuse any request for the reelection of the President (see Fides 6/04/2017).
