AMERICA/COLOMBIA - The help of the Catholic Church to those fleeing from Venezuela

Wednesday, 5 April 2017

Cucuta (Agenzia Fides) - The recent events and political developments that are taking place in Venezuela (see Fides 1 and 3/04/2017) have increased the arrival of Venezuelans in Colombia, in search of better opportunities. The Bishop of the Colombian diocese of Cúcuta, His Exc. Mgr. Víctor Manuel Ochoa Cadavid, noted that the issue is worrying, given the social and economic situation of the inhabitants of the nearby country.
The Colombian Catholic Church played a vital role in providing humanitarian assistance, already in August 2015, to thousands of Colombians and Venezuelans who were expelled en masse from Venezuela (see Fides 1 and 9/03/2015). "We delivered food, medicines and gave assistance to the people", said the Bishop in the note sent to Fides.
Mgr. Ochoa made these statements to the local press on April 3, commenting on the meeting held on March 27 between the two border Bishops: Mgr. Víctor Manuel Ochoa Cadavid and Mgr. Mario del Valle Moronta, respectively of the Diocese of Cucuta (Colombia) and San Cristobal (Venezuela). (CE) (Agenzia Fides 05/04/2017)
