AMERICA/DOMINICAN REPUBLIC - Mgr. Nicanor Peña: "Corruption and impunity must be fought at all levels"

Tuesday, 4 April 2017

Santo Domingo (Agenzia Fides) - The President of the Episcopal Conference of the Dominican Republic, His Exc. Mgr. Gregorio Nicanor Peña, has spoken in favor of the investigation by the Attorney General on the scandal of corruption related to the "Odebretch Case". Odebrecht is Brazil’s biggest construction company, accused of bribing public officials from several Latin American countries (see Fides 18/02/2017).
According to the note sent to Fides, Mgr. Nicanor Peña said that, once those responsible have been identified, they must pay for their actions. He also pointed out that society's request to fight corruption and impunity should be extended at all levels.
"In the family and in society in general there is a lot of corruption. It is usually attributed only to the government, but if we look around there is a lot of corruption close to us, and we too are guilty", the Bishop said in an interview after the opening of the National Day of the Journalist, celebrated on Sunday, April 2 in the Dominican Republic, organized by the Pontificia Universidad Catolica Madre y Maestra (PUCMM) in Santo Domingo and by the Episcopal Conference.
According to local news, on Sunday, March 26 thousands of Dominicans marched in Santiago de los Caballeros, the second largest city in the country, asking for concrete actions by the Dominican justice for those involved in the case of Odebrecht bribes. The demonstrators also read a statement calling for the suspension of operations of the Brazilian construction Company in the country. The Odebrecht case involves more and more politicians and authorities in several Latin American countries every day. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 04/04/2017)
