AMERICA/MEXICO - Priest kidnapped in Tamaulipas has been released

Friday, 31 March 2017

Tamaulipas (Agenzia Fides) - "Father Oscar Lopez Navarro, 40, was released on Thursday, March 30", said the Bishop of the Diocese of Tampico in Tamaulipas, His Exc. Mgr. José Luis Dibildox Martinez. He informed the local press that although he has not yet spoken with the priest because he was exhausted and was resting after the bad experience, he is doing well.
With regard to the release, the Bishop, according to information sent to Fides, said: "It is not the amount of money but I think the prayers of so many people, the pressure on behalf of the media and also the interest of the authorities helped to solve this situation". And stressed: "What matters is that he is well".
According to a local radio station, the kidnappers had contacted the priests of the "Misioneros de Cristo mediador" community, who lead the parish of San José Obrero of Altamira, where Father Lopez Navarro carries out his pastoral service and asked for a very high figure as ransom. The priests said that it was impossible to collect this amount and did not file a complaint to the police for fear of endangering the life of the kidnapped priest. (CE) (Agenzia Fides 31/03/2017)
