AFRICA/DR CONGO - Two UN experts kidnapped in central Kasai

Wednesday, 15 March 2017 kidnappings

Kinshasa (Agenzia Fides) - "On March 13, CEPADHO learned with dismay about the abduction of Michael Sharp and Zahida Katala of the UN Expert Group for the Democratic Republic of Congo", said a statement sent to Agenzia Fides by the organization for the defense of human rights in the DRC.
The two UN experts, the American Michael Sharp and Swede Zahida Katalan, were kidnapped on the road axis Bukonde-Tshimbulu on the Moyo bridge near the village of Ngombe, in the province of central Kasai, where for months there have been clashes between the army and militants of traditional late chief Kamuina Nsapu (see Fides 20/02/2017). At the moment the group that kidnapped the two UN experts together with the four Congolese nationals who were with them is not known.
"Our organization believes that this criminal act is aimed at undermining relations between the DRC and the Countries of origin of the two UN experts" says CEPADHO. (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 15/03/2017)
