AFRICA/DR CONGO - New ethnic violence in North Kivu

Tuesday, 14 February 2017 massacres   armed groups

Kinshasa (Agenzia Fides) - Three people were killed and 13 abducted. This is the toll of yet another ethnic attack which took place in Rutshuru Territory in North Kivu in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
As reported to Agenzia Fides by CEPADHO (Study Centre for the Promotion of peace, democracy and human rights), in the afternoon of 13 February, a commando of Nyatura militia, of the Hutu community, attacked a group of ethnic Nande and Hunde farmers in Kyaghala.
CEPADHO says that it was a targeted killing on the basis of ethnicity. The toll is still provisional. The three confirmed victims were slaughtered while we still do not know the fate of those abducted.
CEPADHO recalls that in the area there are several armed groups, including the FDLR (Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda) Nyatura militia and the May-May, who have made the life for the civilian population impossible, to the point that inhabitants of entire villages were forced to flee elsewhere.
