AMERICA/MEXICO - Mexico closed between two walls

Mexico City (Agenzia Fides) - Mexican public opinion remains divided on the construction of the "Trump wall" in the north with the United States, but begins to wonder about the wall that Mexico continues to strengthen along its southern border with Guatemala.
The northern and southern borders of Mexico are completely different: while the northern border with the United States, has for some time been guarded by thousands of agents and cameras, the southern border was practically no man's land until very recently (see Fides 2/07/2014).
Tapachula, in southern Mexico, is the most important Mexican city on the border with Guatemala, and also the one that receives the most illegal immigrants determined to reach the "American dream". That of Tapachula is one of the 11 official steps (there are 10 in Guatemala and one in Belize) that divide the "South" and "North" of the world in the Americas.
The border between Guatemala and Mexico is in fact the true gateway to the United States because the Mexican government grants legal migrants a transit permit allowing them 20 days to cross the country to the north until the border with the United States.
The border between Guatemala and Mexico, 871 kilometers, includes the Guatemalan department of San Marcos, Huehuetenango, El Quiché and ElPetén, and the Mexican states of Quintana Roo, Campeche, Tabasco and Chiapas.
Today the situation has changed a lot since Fides had reported the security project for the southern border of Mexico, which was funded by the United States and was carried out jointly by the two governments to "block" the wave of Central American migrants (see Fides 02/07/2014).
Today not only do we find Central American migrants but there are also groups of African and Haitian migrants. According to the press, in 2015 there were about 4000 Africans who rose to about 19,000 in 2016 between Africans and Haitians who arrived in Mexico with the aim of crossing the American wall.
Faced with this situation, the Mexican government decided to create a militarized zone in the south of the country and to strengthen the wall with Guatemala. (CE) (Agenzia Fides, 14/02/2017)
