Havana (Agenzia Fides) - The 56th National Vaccination Campaign against Poliomyelitis will soon begin in Cuba.
Organizers expect that over 471,000 Cuban children will be vaccinated. The first phase will take place from February 20 to 26 and the second from 17 to 23 April. Of the total number of children, over 363 thousand do not reach 3 years of age. The vaccines will be administered in clinics in the Country. According to the World Health Organization, polio is a highly infectious disease that mainly affects infants and young children, caused by a virus that invades the nervous system and can lead to paralysis within hours. Initial symptoms are fever, fatigue, headache, vomit, neck stiffness and joint pain. An infection out of 200 causes an irreversible paralysis, in particular the legs, and between 5 to 10% of these cases die due to paralysis of the respiratory muscles.
