EUROPE/ITALY - Gregorian University’s Interdisciplinary Centre of Social Communications marks 15th anniversary: 17 November symposium on Communication and Participation

Rome (Fides Service) - Activity of didactics, formation, research; study for a Christian perspective on the media and information system; instruction of thousands of students, religious and lay working in print media, radio and TV: this is the service offered by the CICS Interdisciplinary Centre of Social Communications at the Gregorian University in Rome run by the Jesuit Fathers. This year CICS is celebrating its 25th anniversary. Promoted by the then rector Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini SJ, the Centre stands as a sign of the special attention given to communications by the Society of Jesus.
Events to mark the anniversary include a day Seminar on 17 November at the University with the title “Communicating and Participating. From the media to participated communication: challenges for the Church?” Speakers will be experts, theologians, journalists, teachers, media operators including Prof. Jacob Srampickal SJ, director of CICS and former director Fr. Robert White SJ, for many years a point of reference for studies on the media at the Gregorian University. Guest speakers will include Prof. Gianfranco Bettetini, docent in Mass media communication at Sacred Heart University in Milan and Dr. Fonju Ndemesh, researcher at Bologna University, Rev Vinicio Albanesi, founder of Redattore Sociale agency, Fr. Federico Lombardi, director of Vatican Radio, Mgr. Cipriano Calderon former editor of Osservatore Romano Spanish edition.
The symposium will focus on recent media theories and audience research, and radical ambivalence of communications: mechanism of manipulation but also a space for active participation and the role of communications in the global society.
