AFRICA/CENTRAL AFRICAN REP. - The village of Pygmies in Ngouma to ensure essential health services and education for children and women

Bagandou (Agenzia Fides) - The construction of a health center, a village and schools are some of the initiatives of the non-profit Friends for Central Africa, regarding the Aka Pygmies, which started in 2000 and still in progress. The goal is to help this population to overcome the great difficulties in which they live, provide them with essential health services and education for children and women. The health center is located in Zomea and has a maternity ward that guarantees safer pregnancies and deliveries, the education of mothers and postnatal care of infants. Over 1,500 pygmies live in the village of Nguma and has a dispensary, schools, homes for teachers and volunteers, a well and a warehouse for agricultural products. The non-profit organization has also built a primary school with six classrooms which replaced the previous in mud and straw. In 2013 the nursery, called 'School of Joy' was built. Schools are now attended by over 250 children. In addition to the provision of teaching materials and educational needs, the Association provides for the payment of teachers, recruited in the capital and housed in four houses. In addition to kindergarten, the project for the 'St. Daniel Comboni' primary school has been launched which sees the Congregation of the Comboni Sisters as partners. (AP) (Agenzia Fides 28/01/2017)
