Caracas (Agenzia Fides) - The Venezuelan Episcopal Conference (CEV) issued a message addressed to the authorities of Venezuela on recent economic measures imposed. With regard to the new measures, the Bishops denounce: "They have worsened the crisis affecting our nation and all citizens ... the disadvantaged and vulnerable people are those who suffer most ... People who make long queues (to be able to buy some bread or milk ed), they feel abandoned and unprotected by all political leaders. Many men and women do not hesitate to express their feelings of frustration and abandonment by those who should speak and promote equitable solutions".
The statement, sent to Fides, reports: "There is great uncertainty because people do not know what will happen to their money and their savings. This can lead to violence and disorder", write the Bishops.
The text concludes with three demands: we must all remember that the people are the real protagonist of democracy; political leaders must listen to the serious problems that these government measures have caused; all Catholics must open themselves to charity and solidarity, opening the doors to those who suffer to share a bit of food and support.
The document, with the date of 17 December, is signed by Cardinal Jorge Urosa Savino, Archbishop of Caracas, Cardinal Baltazar E. Porras Cardozo, Archbishop of Mérida, by His Exc. Mgr.
