AFRICA/GHANA - Elections: for the Bishops "Ghana proves to be a beacon of democracy"

Accra (Agenzia Fides) - "The outcome of the elections is a victory for Ghana and not just for any particular political party. Let us therefore rekindle the spirit of national unity and move Ghana our beloved country forward", says a statement from the Episcopal Conference of Ghana (GCBC), signed by its President, His Exc. Mgr. Philip Naameh, Archbishop of Tamale.
The GCBC welcomes the behavior and maturity with which Ghanaians conducted themselves during the presidential and parliamentary elections on December 7. "The election was one of the most peaceful and successful elections the country has witnessed, a feat that has made Ghana once again a beacon of democracy in Africa and the world at large".
The GCBC press statement also congratulated His Excellence, President John Dramani Mahama for such display of maturity statesmanship in conceding defeat to the President-Elect, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. They also congratulated the Electorl Commission for living up to the task , and organizing a very credible, transparent, free and fair elections. They also saluted the National Peace Council, Security Agencies, Judiciary, Civil Society Organizations, Faith Based Organizations, the Media and international Observers Organizations and communities for their invaluable contributions to the successful elections.
The GCBC look forward to a peaceful, smooth and transparent transfer of power to the incoming government, calling on all parties and institutions concerned to be committed in the transition process.
The Bishops' Conference calls on political parties who have gone about vandalizing national and private assets, and assaulting persons perceived as opponents, to desist from these acts of lawlessness calling on the security agencies to enforce the laws of the land and ensure the safety of life and property of Ghanaians.
