AFRICA/UGANDA - The Congolese Yira offer themselves as mediators between the Ugandan government and the "Kingdom" of Rwenzururu

Kampala (Agenzia Fides) - Kyaghanda Yira ASBL, the organizational structure of the cultural community Yira, offers its mediation to resolve the crisis between the "Kingdom" of Rwenzururu and the Government of Uganda. Between 26 and 27 November in fact, in the clashes between security forces and the "Royal Guards" of King Charles Wesley Mumbere more than 100 people were killed (see Fides 01/12/2016).
The Yira (or Nande) are the most important ethnic group in the North Kivu province in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo that borders with the Ugandan region of Rwenzururu.
"Given the unique culture that the Yira share in Uganda and the DRC, in spite of the delimitation of the political border that seems to present them as two distinct peoples, while only one - reads a statement of the cultural association – considered it vital to immediately adopt an attitude to foster reconciliation between the Ugandan government and the traditional power of Rwenzururu, offering itself as a mediator".
The statement launches an appeal to members of the Yira community to "maintain calm, without giving in to agitation, which would cause an erroneous interpretation of the facts". (L.M.) (Agenzia Fides 06/12/2016)
